Opening hours
- March 15th - April 26 2026 : open Thrusday to Sunday from 10h to 18h30.
- May 1st - September 27 2026 : Open everyday form 10h to 18h30.
- October 1st - November 11th 2026 : Open Thursday to Sunday 10h to 18h30
The Remarkable Gardens of La Ballue are situated 45 minutes north of Rennes, on the road to Mont-Saint-Michel, between Saint-Malo (less than an hour away) and Fougères (30 minutes away).

The historic
A poetic celebration of greenery that is part of history
Built on the lands of the Marquis de Ruellan, a friend of Henry IV and Richelieu, the Château de la Ballue is crowned by striking 17th-century terraces. In the height of the Renaissance, the gardens were designed in the poetic and refined style of Baroque Italy. At their foot lies an unrivalled panorama of the Couesnon valley. A romantic vista that inspired some of the great names of French literature, such as Chateaubriand, Balzac and Victor Hugo.
Deeply rooted in this part of the Marches de Bretagne, the classical garden and the labyrinthine garden were revived in 1973 under the impetus of the publisher Claude Arthaud. It was she who inspired the architects Paul Maymont and François Hébert-Stevens to breathe new life into the Jardins de la Ballue, conceived as a fusion of modernism and primal lyricism.
Since 2005, Marie-Françoise Mathiot and her husband Alain have been working tirelessly to enhance and beautify the Jardins de la Ballue, transforming them into a jewel of topiary art. A masterpiece of horticultural architecture, the Jardins de la Ballue have held the “Jardin Remarquable” designation since 2005.
